Remote Telecoms Upgrade

Objective

Aurora delivered a remote telecoms infrastructure upgrade involving the decommissioning of an existing pole and installation of a new 20-metre telecoms mast. The project was located in a highly remote area with significant access constraints. Careful planning and complex logistics were required to transport oversized equipment through narrow, weight-restricted roads in Northern Ireland. Despite the challenges, the project was completed successfully, supporting ongoing network infrastructure improvements. We sought to safely decommission an existing telecoms pole and install a new upgraded mast in a remote location with minimal disruption to surrounding infrastructure.

Challenges

The project involved numerous site-specific challenges that required tailored solutions, including:

Adverse weather and unstable ground conditions

Narrow access roads with limited passing points and a 2.9m width restriction

Local traffic management requiring coordination with authorities and road closure permits

Weight restrictions near the site, necessitating a mid-route load transfer

Complex lifting operations requiring specialist compact crane equipment

Use of track mats and constant site adaptation

Solution

Aurora delivered a highly adaptive and well-coordinated solution that included:

Detailed logistical planning to navigate narrow roads and weight-restricted zones, using specialised tractor-trailer transport for the final approach.

Deployment of a Jekko 545 compact crane to lift and position the new mast and remove the old one, allowing for precise installation from limited access points.

Use of flexible work methods and contingency plans to respond to changing weather and ground conditions.
